North Node & South Node of the Moon in AstrologyBy Nancy Arruda
The North Node and South Node in astrology are points found out in the universe. They are formed by the crossing of two orbital paths; the Moon around the Earth, and the Earth around the Sun. Typically when a planet moves in the universe it follows a clockwise direction, however, the North and South Node follow a counterclockwise direction through the zodiac. Astrologers use the North and South Node to gain understanding of the gifts & talents within an individual; what they have fully come into this life with (South Node) and what they have come into this life to develop (North Node). On a Soul level, our Soul has strengths and overdeveloped qualities from past lives (you may really notice these traits within your childhood), and once integrated into our human nature, we as humans have a tendency to rely heavily on those traits. The traits can be found within ones chart depicted by which sign and house our South Node is in. When we incarnate into this lifetime, we bring the traits of our past lives into this one and allow our past traits to take over and consume a part of our personality. When someone chooses not to be conscious of their behavior and move to a place of being reactive in life, we will fall back into our South Node position, instilling within our self the traits of the sign that it is in. However, for our Soul’s development, and for the purpose of evolving, we must move out of our comfort zone and find the balance, between what we knew or lived in the past, and how to incorporate what we are here to achieve in this lifetime. The North Node depicts what we are here to learn and develop in this lifetime; the lessons of the Soul, and the qualities and character development of those lessons are found within the sign it is located in. In some way, our North Node is the answer to the question, “who do you want to be when you grow up?” However this is not something that is easily attained, as it is like strengthening a muscle that one has not used in a while. As an individual evolves in life, they begin to pick up the lessons of the North Node, and integrate its qualities into this lifetime. When one chooses to be consciously aware of themselves, they can begin to work with their North Node in finding a path in life; a path of least resistance. Through evolution, we cannot just jump from one side of the fence to the other overnight. Just like strengthen a muscle, one must warm up to it first, stretch it, but if you stretch it too quickly you will tear the muscle, instilling a fear of moving forward. When that happens, you fall back onto your South Node. Everything in life has a time, place and space. So it takes time to develop the qualities of your North Node, for you can only consciously develop the North Node, as you actively release the South Node. Thus, attaining a balance! A lot of astrological charts will only show the North Node, as this is the development placement. The sign of your North Node represents the psychological shifts that need to take place within this existence in order for your soul’s evolution to occur. The house it is located in will depict what type of experiences in life you will have around your development, the types of life experiences you will need in order to evolve. However, if your South Node is not listed in your chart, there is no need to be concerned, for it is always exactly opposite your North Node or 180 degrees away. Where’s your North Node and what is your path of least resistance within your Souls journey?
