What is Smudging?
The burning of incenses or herbs is known as ‘smudging’. Smudging is a sacred practice held by many traditions including American and Canadian Native Indians. There are many herbs that are grown on this earth that contain healing (medicinal and spiritual) properties. Each herb has its own unique quality that is released when burning or smudging. The smoke that is emanating from the smouldering herb carries the properties of the herb around the aura or environment and sends it out into the universe. There are many reasons why one would smudge. If you feel there is energy in your environment (work or home) that is emanating a negative or lower vibration, this vibration then interferes with your own personal energy field or Aura. Smudging transmutes the negative or lower energy on a vibrational level that can't interfere with our day to day. We can also smudge our own personal Aura so that we eliminate certain interfering energies and enhance other characteristics that we choose to be working with. There are different ways one can implement smudges. There are incenses that you can buy in a stick format that one just lights and the smoke and aroma of that incense smoulders in the air. There are also loose herb and resin type smudges that need to be placed on a special charcoal for smouldering. This is done by lighting the charcoal, placing it in a fire safe container and then placing a small amount of the herbal mixture on the charcoal. Depending on what type of container you are using it is recommended that you place sand in the container. The Sand acts as a heat absorber, it holds some of the heat with in it and avoids it going directly through the container so that you don’t burn your hands or damages the surface that the container is on.
If you are burning a braid of sweet grass or a bundle of tied herbs it takes time for this to smoulder. Light a candle and hold it over the flame until you get enough fire through it to smoulder. Hold the braid over a bowl to catch the ashes. Bundles or braid will eventually go out by themselves, but always remember fire safety and NEVER leave it unattended.
